Dear Reader,

The Institute of Mathematics and Basic Science is responsible for the development of course programmes and education of courses in mathematics, biometrics, applied statistics, furthermore introductory physics and chemistry. The research topics mainly focus on interdisciplinary problems, partly by supporting the research activities of other institutes of the University. The colleagues of the Institute are dedicated educators, besides providing qualitative courses they focus on talent management and science popularization as well. Also, the Institute is looking for scientific cooperation with other Institutes of MATE, other research groups and enterprises.

The Institute stands of 4 departments, namely Department of Applied Statistics, Department of Physics, Department of Chemistry and Department of Mathematics and Modelling. Also, the Institute has colleagues working at all 5 campuses of MATE. The staff consists of 31 lecturers/researchers, 2 professor emeriti and 2 administrative or technical colleagues. Nearly 75% of the lecturers/researchers have a PhD degree.

Although the Institute does not have a training programme under its own supervision, it is involved in nearly 40 training programmes with at least one course.

The research activities of the colleagues are mainly in the fields of applied mathematics, statistics, physics or chemistry with applications in agriculture, life sciences or engineering. The colleagues have long-time experience in interdisciplinary research and they have been  cooperating with other researchers with great success, which is justified by our prestigious publication activity.

We hope that we can meet you soon as a student registered for one or more of our courses or as a researcher involved in a joint project or a coauthor of a publication.

Dr. László Székely
